After Awalt, I attended colleges in Oklahoma and
North Carolina, then worked at newspapers in
Oklahoma and Phoenix, the San Jose
Mercury and, from 1990 to June 2004, the L.A. Times.
After being laid off from the Times, I went back to
school and got a credential to teach special ed, and have just started
my second year teaching at Buena High School in Ventura.
I have two daughters, both adopted from Calcutta, who are 16
and 14.
The other major component of my life is A.A. I
celebrated 28 years of sobriety in July.
