Updated 26-Jan-2008. I cried the day I graduated from High School. Not from saddness at leaving friends and good times but from gratitude to the powers that be that I never had to go back. For those of you who remember me I don’t want to hear from you, I just feel another segment of the class of ’65 is underrepresented on this page. Those of us who don’t have college degrees, and kids with college degrees. The ones who don’t own businesses or vacation homes. The Democrats. Those of us who are not “successful” in a conventional way but are happy anyway. Don’t get me wrong. I am in favor of continued education whether it takes place in a classroom or in the city dump. Just about the most important lesson I’ve learned is that life if much too short to spend around people you don’t like and who don’t like you. It’s one they don’t teach in High School. I’ve left two husbands and a number of jobs and I’m so much better off. I have two boys I love with all my heart and a man I waited too long to meet. And, while I won’t be taking early retirement, I have a good job and expect to be comfortable in my old age. I drive a two-door speck but my gasoline costs less than $30 a month and the insurance costs next to nothing. I have credit card debt but I have neat toys. I’ve accepted Jesus as my personal Savior but I’m appalled by what passes for Christianity these days. I lost my mom but I still have Dad even though he drives me crazy. I gave my parents grief but they forgave me. I think computers are the greatest invention ever. At last I can balance my checkbook and haven’t bounced a check or missed a payment since I got one. So, for all the rest of you, I don’t want to hear from you either. I just want to say don’t let these married- for-eighty-five-years-SUV-driving-soccer-grandparents make you feel bad. Step up and post your non-success stories. You matter too.
